Credit Union of Colorado
Membership Share Account – Explained
On September 9, 2021, we reduced our membership requirement to $5. Credit Union of Colorado bylaws and the Federal Credit Union Act require funding of a membership account to become a credit union member. The money belongs to each member, but it is not available for use.
Credit Union of Colorado maintains these funds for each member in a separate non-transactional account. The reasons for the separate account are threefold:
- To help members avoid overdrawing their accounts and incur additional charges.
- To be transparent and minimize confusion about account balances.
- To allow anyone to join Credit Union of Colorado without requiring a savings account.
The required membership balance of $5.00 is displayed alongside your other accounts on electronic and paper statements.
